Trial Hosts
How far in advance do I need to apply to host a trial?
You must submit your trial application at least 6 weeks prior to the event date for Rally or Combination trials, and a minimum of 3 weeks for Working-only trials.
Can I host a trial if there’s already one scheduled nearby?
Applications won’t be automatically approved if another organization has an approved CARO trial within 250 km on the same weekend. You’ll need to first obtain permission from the organization already approved for that trial date.
What are the minimum ring size requirements?
Rally trials require a minimum of 1,500 square feet. Working trials need 900 square feet for 3 or fewer exercises, and 1,500 square feet for 4 or more exercises. The venue must have non-slip flooring.
What happens if my judge can’t attend due to illness or weather?
A replacement judge can use the original approved courses, and the original judge receives compensation for course design. Results are recorded under the original judge’s name if they designed the courses.
What paperwork do I need to submit after the trial?
You must submit the Judge’s Trial Record, Titles Achieved Sheet, Catalogue, Trial Incident Report (if applicable), and Fee Submission Form to CARO within the specified time limit.
Am I required to provide ribbons?
Qualifying score ribbons displaying the CARO logo are mandatory. Placement ribbons and title ribbons are optional and at your discretion.
For Judges
When do I need to submit my course designs?
Rally course designs must be submitted to [email protected] at least 3 weeks before the trial. Working ring layouts don’t require approval.
Can I enter my own dog in levels I’m judging?
Yes, as long as a second judge is present to score you. Your scores are recorded under your own name and count toward titles but aren’t eligible for placements or special awards in levels you’re judging.
How long must I keep trial records?
You must maintain copies of trial records for a minimum of 3 months, though keeping them for one year is recommended.
What expenses can I include when invoicing the host?
Only include expenses discussed and agreed upon before the assignment. Usually acceptable expenses include judge’s fee, mileage, lunch and potential travel and hotel costs. Unexpected expenses must be communicated with the host immediately to reach an agreement on how they’ll be handled.
What do I need to maintain my judging status?
You must maintain professional membership in good standing, complete continuing education requirements, and judge at least once every two years.
