Competitor FAQs

How do I register my dog?

All dogs must be registered to compete in CARO-sanctioned events. This is a one-time process, and the registration number assigned is permanent. To register your dog, create an account to access and submit the online registration form. A receipt for the registration will be emailed to you with your dog’s CARO ID#. Save this number in a safe place, as you will need it for each event you enter.

Do I need to be a CARO member to participate in trials?

No, handlers do not have to be members to participate in CARO trials. However, your dog must be registered with CARO to compete.

What does it cost to become a member?

The annual fee for a regular membership is $27.50 and for a professional membership $50.00.

How old must a dog be to enter a trial?

Dogs must be at least six (6) months of age on the day of the trial.

Would my child be allowed to compete with my dog?

Although CARO’s rules do not exclude children, some hosts may restrict participation due to insurance requirements. Anyone interested should check with the trial organizer to confirm whether age restrictions apply for that event.

Can only the registered owner handle a dog in competition?

No, anyone can handle a registered dog. The handler does not show in the trial record.

How do I find out about trials in my area?

Under Events > Calendar, you can find upcoming trials by date. Location details, divisions and levels offered, and contact information are listed for each trial. CARO hosts at least two virtual trials per year, which are also listed and run over a longer period (usually about 2 weeks).

Are there accommodations for dogs and/or handlers with physical challenges or mobility issues?

CARO is an inclusive organization that welcomes all handlers and dogs who enjoy competing, provided they can participate without pain. Our handbooks include examples of possible accommodations and explain how to request them at any trial.

Can female dogs in heat compete?

No, female dogs in estrus (heat) may not compete at in-person trials, but they may be able to participate in virtual trials.

What is “For Exhibition Only” (FEO)?

FEO allows teams to participate in any round for practice. FEO runs don’t count toward titles or placements, allow rewards at any time and all levels, and are at the discretion of the trial host.

Can I use food to reward my dog during trials?
Yes, in the Novice, Intermediate and Advanced levels of Rally at specific stations, and between Exercises in Working. You can reward your dog with food, toys, touch and praise once he has completed the station.
